TO
ALL WEMMER MEMBERS
Sunday 27th September 2009
On the water:
The only oarsmen/women that I was exposed to were 45 Jeppe boys at their rowing camp at Orkney on Vaal on the Sunday and then 12 Wemmer Junior Girls (Parktown Girls H.S.) on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th at Wemmer Pan.
Wemmer Juniors:
-
U14: Siobhan van Rooyen and Savanah Rogers
-
U15: Kayla Niehaus and Chenille D’Hotman
-
U16: None
-
Open: Olivia Hodgkinson (Captain), Michelle Brown, Kirsten Brown, Abigail Dawson, Kristen Bishop, Ann Sawers, Lauren Harmsen and Amy Hall.
-
Coach: Mpumi Geza
These juniors have a full and exciting time ahead. They are off to a rowing camp Thursday through Sunday this week. On Saturday they compete in the St Johns regatta.
Then apart from all the local Gauteng regattas they will compete in the schools Boat Race at Port Alfred and the Buffalo Regatta at East London.
We wish them every success in their ventures through to the S.A. Schools Champs next March 2010 .
The Captain (Jnr) thinks they need a new 4x+ boat to win at School champs next March?!
I have rigged Henley, our only 4x+ boat, as follows. Dims. in cms.
Height above seat: Bow side 16.5 – Stroke side 16. I have had to place washers under the foot plates on some of the riggers to achieve the height settings. The washers have been glued to the saxboard to try and prevent them being displaced during de-rigging and re-rigging when transporting the boat.
Span: 161 Oars: 287 O/A, 202 O/B, 85 I/B, pitch 4 to 6 degrees, overlap 9
Footboards: 45 degrees – Behind the work left to the coach for individual settings – height above keel 2nd hole from top
Lateral pitch: 2 to 3 degrees as best as I can measure
I am no expert on funny rigs, i.e. sculling! Sweep oar, yes! If there is something radically wrong with the rigging as made let the experts shout now or hold their peace! I am concerned about the overlap of 9. Seems a little for comfort although when they were rowing past me it seemed to be OK.
Electra:
I hope arrangements have been made to fetch it from John Waugh so we can have it for Sprint
Wemmer Sprint:
Final count down has arrived. Plenty to do! I like to believe the most comprehensive duty roster circulated by Catherine Davis was fully subscribed to by all members last Sunday. I tried to print it so I could fill it in and hand to Catherine this Sunday but my computer, handed down from Noah’s Ark, would only print the column lines and boxes etc. No writing or numbers! I will be available to help on the Friday and will man the duty boat to tend to the rowing course and take refreshments etc. to the officials on the day.
I need someone to help me lay the traffic lane cable, No. 9, this Sunday at 09:30 after tea until 12:30. I am sure Danny Joubert would make himself available if it were not too far to travel up from Sommerset West for this chore! Let us make this one a special event we can be proud of Cake roster: Sunday 4th Margaret. Sunday 11th Sprint leftovers after we have cleared up!
Keep fit
Allie
