TO
ALL WEMMER MEMBERS
Sunday 31st January 2010
Good Morning all
An eventful weekend was had at the VLC regatta at Germiston lake this past weekend.
In between the rain, thunderstorms and lightning, some great racing took place.
The juniors did the club and themselves proud, by winning many races and finishing in the top three positions in many of their races.
(I will put the results up as soon as I get them)
The masters too had some great racing, most notably in the eights.
This taking place after a thunderstorm, which saw all the boats on the water being chased back to shore, to sit out the storm.
Thankfully my crew and I were spared the “unnecessary” row back to shore, as we had weatherman MacKinnon in the boat, who correctly predicted when the rain would fall, thus giving us time to manoeuvre our eight onto the bank, where we then huddled under a gazebo in the picnic area, shooting the breeze.
Congratulations must be given to Elra, who completed her first race, and judging by the smile on her face, she absolutely loved it. *WELL DONE ELRA!!*
The crab of the day must surly be awarded to Dom, who caught a monster on the finishing line, which almost threw him right out of his scull.
Only his remarkable boatmanship, saved him from falling in the drink.
This weekend brings with it the RVR regatta.
However, this has been postponed to the 20 and 21 February 2010.
The reasons for the postponement is based on safety concerns. Due to the high volume of rain in the last couple of weeks, the river is flowing three times faster than the organisers have ever had to deal with. As I write this, the Vaal dam has just opened all its sluice gates, which is the first time in about 13 years.

The grounds at both the spectators area and launch areas are muddy and slippery, not to mention the jetties being under water.
On Wednesday I was told the water is flowing at around 1m per second next to the bank!! So getting to the start would be a challenge all on its own.
In lieu of this, it would be a good opportunity to get those people who are going to row together at the event, to get some boat time together.
As we were going to use the same boats at RVR as VLC, none of these boats have been rigged, so we would need to rig the boats on Sunday before the row.
Crews would look like this:
Quad: Eight:
John Bothma R. MacKinnon
Nicolette Hayes D. Van Es
John Cluver M. Madeley
Margaret Brouwer S. d’Hotman
P. Surjeon
P. Croall
J. Quy
J. Cluver ( L. Whitehead as substitute)
I would also like to get Allies handicap races back on track, and perhaps we could get the ball rolling again this weekend.
Enjoy your day, see you Sunday
Shaun
